چکیده
Sometimes merely randomization is not enough to show what we want. A common strategy is then to alter the instance we construct via randomness. For example, if the expectation of the parameter X of a random object is EX, then we have an instance with parameter ≤ EX. However, what we are after might be a “perfect” object with X = 0. Thus, what we do is to “correct bad properties”. Once again, this is best shown by examples. An independent set of a graph is the complement of a clique; that is, S is an independent set, if there is no edge between vertices of S.

Usually, when we use the probabilistic method, the desired event holds with very high probability. On the other hand, suppose we have n mutually independent events, each of which holds with probability p, then the conjunction of all of them holds with probability p. This is exponentially small but strictly positive. In most applications, the desired event cannot be decomposed into n mutually in...

متن کاملThe Combinatorics of Patterns in Subsets and Graphs
Preface During the fall of 2004 Fan Chung Graham taught a graduate course at UCSD about the combinatorics of patterns in subsets and graphs. Class members would take turns taking notes and then write them up, this is a collection of those notes (with some light revision). We thank Fan for teaching the class and for providing some corrections/directions on the lecture notes. We would also like t...

متن کاملLower limb amputee survival.
A total of 1710 primary amputees have been studied over a 25 year period and their survival time has been calculated. These were all consecutive primary lower limb amputees admitted to the Dundee Limb Fitting Centre during the period 1965-1989. Overall, the median survival was 4 yr 9 mth for the below-knee amputee (1019 patients) and 4 yr 3 mth for the above-knee amputee (586 patients). The vas...
